Transport & Major Road Disruptions

The City of Gold Coast and Queensland Police have announced significant road closures and transport disruptions for Saturday, 21 March 2026, primarily driven by the inaugural Gold Coast T100 Triathlon and ongoing major infrastructure projects. Residents and visitors are urged to plan journeys well in advance.

  • Gold Coast T100 Triathlon Closures: Major thoroughfares will be restricted on Saturday morning. In Biggera Waters, Marine Parade (between Burrows Street and Brisbane Road) is closed from 4:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Labrador will see Brisbane Road eastbound (Turpin Road to Marine Parade) closed during the same window. In Southport, Marine Parade (Nind Street to Ada Bell Way) will remain closed until 4:30 PM.
  • Major Arterial Works: Construction for Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 continues to restrict the Gold Coast Highway to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade (Miami) and George Street East (Burleigh Heads). A strictly enforced 40km/h speed limit remains in place. Additionally, the bridge overpass at Ridgevale Drive in the northern suburbs is fully closed for the Coomera Connector Stage 1 project.
  • Rail Disruptions: Queensland Rail has scheduled a major track closure for the weekend of March 21–22. Rail replacement buses will operate between Roma Street and Banoon stations. Commuters traveling to and from Brisbane should allow for significant additional travel time.

Public Health & Environmental Advisories

Health authorities and City environmental services have issued the following active advisories for the region:

  • Stormwater & Swimming Safety: Following recent seasonal rainfall, the City recommends residents avoid swimming in coastal beaches for at least 24 hours, and in rivers, lakes, or estuaries for up to three days. Elevated bacterial levels in runoff pose a heightened risk of infection.
  • Communicable Disease Vigilance: Queensland Health continues to monitor community transmission of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) and Measles. Residents are advised to verify their vaccination status and consult 13-HEALTH if symptoms like a persistent cough or high fever develop.
  • Mosquito Management: Specialized teams are active in salt marsh and low-lying areas across the Gold Coast. Property owners are requested to assist by removing standing water from containers and gutters to reduce breeding sites.

Community & Facilities Updates

Public access to several facilities and waterways will be restricted due to maintenance and major events:

  • Park Closures: Elanora Linkage Park remains fully closed to the public as crews conduct critical landslip repairs and stormwater infrastructure upgrades. These safety works are expected to continue through mid-year.
  • Boat Ramp Access: Due to triathlon activities, several boat ramps will be restricted on Saturday, 21 March, between 4:30 AM and 10:30 AM, including the Broadwater Parklands, Loders Creek, and Harley Park ramps. Pelican Beach Boat Ramp will remain restricted until 4:30 PM.
  • Major Events: The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships ("The Aussies") officially commence today at Broadbeach, Kurrawa, and North Kirra. High pedestrian traffic and localized parking restrictions are expected in these beachside precincts.
