Significant Disruptions for Sunday Commuters

Gold Coast residents and visitors should prepare for a complex travel day this Sunday, 1 March 2026. Major infrastructure projects and critical rail maintenance are set to impact several key transit corridors. While the completion of the Varsity Lakes to Tugun (VL2T) project late last year has improved flow on the southern M1, significant bottlenecks remain on the coastal highway and northern arterial roads.

Translink Service Alerts: Rail Buses in Operation

A major weekend track closure is in effect for the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines. Commuters traveling toward Brisbane or the Airport will face the following changes:

  • Track Work: All train services between Bowen Hills and Banoon stations are suspended for essential maintenance.
  • Rail Replacement: Timetabled rail buses are replacing trains in both directions. Passengers should allow for at least 45 to 60 minutes of additional travel time.
  • Airtrain Impact: Travelers heading to Brisbane Airport from the Gold Coast must transfer to a rail bus at Banoon station to reach Roma Street before reconnecting with the airport line.

Gold Coast Highway and Light Rail Construction

Work on the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 (GCLR3) continues to transform the coastal corridor, requiring significant traffic diversions between Miami and Burleigh Heads:

  • Lane Reductions: The Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade and West Burleigh Road.
  • Speed Restrictions: A strictly enforced 40km/h speed limit is in effect throughout the construction zone to ensure the safety of workers and pedestrians.
  • Burleigh Heads Northbound: A specific active construction zone between Tweed Street and West Burleigh Road is restricting traffic to a single northbound lane, causing heavy congestion during peak Sunday morning periods.

Northern Suburbs and Coomera Connector

In the northern Gold Coast, the Coomera Connector (M9) project continues to alter local traffic patterns despite the recent opening of the Stage 1 North section:

  • Smith Street Motorway: The eastbound access ramp to Smith Street from the motorway in Arundel remains closed for ongoing upgrades. Motorists are advised to use the Gaven Way or Napper Road as alternatives.
  • Helensvale Detours: Bridge construction at Helensvale is impacting Buckler Drive and Town Centre Drive. Detours are currently in place via Discovery Drive.
  • Ridgevale Drive: Motorists should note the closure of the Ridgevale Drive overpass for new bridge construction, with local detours clearly signed.

Drivers are encouraged to check real-time traffic apps before departing and to consider the light rail (G:link) for travel between Helensvale and Broadbeach, as these services remain unaffected by the heavy rail closures.
