Morning Peak: Heavy Congestion Predicted for Coastal Routes

Gold Coast commuters should prepare for a challenging drive this Thursday, 26 February 2026, as major infrastructure projects and planned roadworks impact several key arterials. While the Pacific Motorway (M1) is expected to maintain relatively steady flow following the completion of the Varsity Lakes to Tugun widening project late last year, the coastal corridor remains the primary source of frustration for local motorists.

Major Disruptions on Gold Coast Highway

Construction for the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 (GCLR3) continues to significantly alter traffic patterns between Miami and Burleigh Heads. Motorists are advised to allow at least 20 minutes of additional travel time when navigating the following areas:

  • Miami to Burleigh Heads: The Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade and West Burleigh Road.
  • Burleigh Heads Northbound: A specific construction zone is active between Tweed Street and West Burleigh Road, restricting traffic to a single northbound lane.
  • Service Road Closures: Planned roadworks have closed the Gold Coast Highway service road at Mermaid Beach and Nobby Beach to all traffic.
  • Speed Restrictions: A strictly enforced 40km/h speed limit is in effect throughout the light rail construction corridor for the safety of workers and pedestrians.

Arterial Roadworks and Northern Updates

In the northern suburbs, the recently opened Coomera Connector Stage 1 North (M9) is providing much-needed relief for those traveling between Shipper Drive and Helensvale Road. However, local disruptions persist nearby. The eastbound access ramp to Smith Street from the Smith Street Motorway in Arundel remains closed due to ongoing upgrades. Additionally, bridge construction at Helensvale continues to impact Buckler Drive and Town Centre Drive, with detours in place via Discovery Drive.

Public Transport Alerts and Hinterland Hazards

Translink has issued several alerts for commuters utilizing public transport today:

  • Bus Stop Closures: Multiple stops on the Gold Coast Highway are currently inactive due to light rail works, including Second Avenue, Hythe Street, Third Avenue, and Anzac Parade. Passengers should use temporary stops located at Burleigh Heads Primary School or near Riviera Road.
  • Rail Maintenance: Late-night track closures on the inner city lines may affect the final services for the Gold Coast line tonight. Commuters traveling from Brisbane after 9:00 PM should check the Translink app for updated schedules.
  • Hinterland Road Closures: In the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast Hinterland, Barney View Road and Duck Creek Road remain closed to through traffic due to significant pavement damage.
