Gold Coast Highway: Lane Reductions in Miami and Burleigh

Commuters heading through the coastal corridor this Monday morning should prepare for significant travel time increases. As the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 enters a high-intensity finishing phase, the Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade in Miami and George Street East in Burleigh Heads. These restrictions are necessary as crews focus on streetscape improvements, driveway reinstatements, and preparation for upcoming tram testing. Motorists are advised to avoid the area by using Bermuda Street or the M1 where possible, particularly during the 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM peak.

Smith Street Motorway and Coomera Connector Impacts

In the northern growth corridor, construction on the Coomera Connector (the M9) continues to impact major arterials. While the Stage 1 North section between Shipper Drive and Helensvale Road is now open, intensive work on the Central package is centered around the Smith Street Motorway. Drivers near Molendinar and Arundel should watch for changed traffic conditions at the Smith Street off-ramp, which has been subject to recent closures for bridge-related works. Additionally, detours remain in place near the Ridgevale Drive overpass as construction of the new bridge structure progresses. Expect slower-than-usual speeds on the Smith Street Motorway approach to the M1.

Hinterland Roadworks: Springbrook Reconstruction Begins

For those travelling from the hinterland, the long-awaited disaster recovery reconstruction on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road is officially active this month. Multiple work sites have been established between Neranwood and Pine Creek Road to repair landslip damage. Commuters should expect stop/slow traffic control and intermittent delays. These works are part of a major restoration project and are expected to remain a factor for those using the route for the duration of the month.

Public Transport and Rail Updates

Translink has confirmed minor service changes effective today, Monday, 9 March. Passengers using the Route 719 bus service should be aware of a stop change at Brisbane Road in Arundel due to local road modifications. On the rail network, the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines are running a normal weekday schedule today following the completion of recent maintenance. However, commuters are reminded to plan ahead for a major scheduled track closure next weekend. G:link trams are operating every 7 to 15 minutes, but passengers should exercise extra caution when boarding near construction zones in the Nobby Beach and Miami precincts.

M1 Pacific Motorway Overview

Traffic flow on the M1 through the southern Gold Coast has improved following the official completion of the Varsity Lakes to Tugun (VL2T) widening project last year. All three lanes are open in both directions; however, routine out-of-hours maintenance may result in localized 40 km/h speed zones near the Tallebudgera Creek bridge. Standard Monday morning congestion is anticipated through the Pimpama and Yatala stretches.
