Single Lane Restrictions and Local Closures Impact Burleigh Heads Commute

Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters on the Gold Coast should prepare for several specific disruptions this Wednesday, 4 March 2026, as major infrastructure projects enter new phases and local roadworks commence. While the M1 Pacific Motorway is currently flowing relatively well following the completion of the major Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrades late last year, significant bottlenecks are expected along the coastal corridor and key arterial off-ramps throughout the day.

Major Roadworks and Local Closures

The most significant new disruption begins this morning in Burleigh Heads. A full road closure is now in effect on Lower East Street to facilitate construction activities at 17 East Street. This closure commenced at 6:30 AM today and is restricted to local traffic access only. Residents and commuters heading toward the Burleigh beachfront should anticipate diversions in the immediate vicinity.

The Gold Coast Highway remains the primary point of congestion for coastal travelers. As part of the Light Rail Stage 3 construction, the following conditions are in place:

  • Lane Reductions: The Gold Coast Highway is reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade in Miami and West Burleigh Road.
  • Northbound Bottleneck: A specific single-lane arrangement is active for northbound traffic between Tweed Street and West Burleigh Road.
  • Speed Limits: A strictly enforced 40 km/h speed limit is in effect throughout the construction zone to ensure the safety of workers and motorists.

In Arundel, the eastbound access ramp from the Smith Street Motorway to Smith Street remains closed for planned roadworks. Drivers heading toward Southport or the Broadwater from the motorway are advised to use alternative routes and follow the clearly marked diversions.

Public Transport Alerts

TransLink has confirmed that several bus stops along the Gold Coast Highway remain temporarily closed or relocated due to the ongoing rail works. Commuters using routes 700, 777, and various school services should be aware of the following changes:

  • Miami: The Gold Coast Highway stop at Miami Hotel is closed. Passengers should use the temporary stop located approximately 80 meters away near Kelly Avenue.
  • Burleigh Heads: The Second Avenue stop is closed until further notice, with passengers directed to the Burleigh Heads Primary School stop.

Heavy rail services on the Gold Coast Line are operating on a regular mid-week timetable today with no major disruptions or track closures reported for the morning peak.

Hinterland and Arterial Updates

Motorists in the hinterland should note that reconstruction works on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road are commencing this month. Expect stop/slow traffic control and minor delays between Neranwood and Pine Creek Road as crews begin remediating landslip sites. Additionally, lane reductions continue on sections of Bermuda Street (Southport Burleigh Road) through Robina and Burleigh Waters, which may impact cross-town travel times this afternoon.
