Commuter Alert: Significant Friday Disruptions

Good morning, Gold Coast. Commuters are facing a challenging start to the day this Friday, 10 April 2026, as a combination of major rail network shutdowns and intensive road construction projects create significant bottlenecks across the region. With the city currently in the midst of a massive infrastructure overhaul, travel times are expected to be up to 60 minutes longer than usual on key corridors during both the morning and afternoon peaks.

Massive Rail Shutdown Continues

The most critical update for today is the ongoing rail network closure affecting the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines. As part of the wider April track works program for the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, train services remain heavily disrupted. Translink has confirmed that rail replacement buses are operating between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road stations, with particular focus on the Banoon to Boggo Road stretch where tracks are completely offline.

  • Gold Coast Line: No trains are operating through the inner-city rail hubs. All passengers must transition to replacement buses to reach the Brisbane CBD.
  • Replacement Buses: Both express and all-stop services are active, but commuters should expect high passenger volumes and extended transit times due to heavy M1 traffic.
  • Travel Time: Authorities advise allowing an additional 45 to 60 minutes for any journey involving the northern rail corridor today.

Gold Coast Highway and Light Rail Construction

In the heart of the coastal strip, Stage 3 Light Rail works have reached a critical final phase of track integration. The Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade in Miami and George Street East in Burleigh Heads. A strictly enforced 40km/h work zone speed limit is in effect throughout this 6.7-kilometre corridor.

Motorists are also warned that "Safety Tram" testing is occurring at various intervals today as the system moves toward its mid-2026 operational date. This testing may cause temporary halts at signalized intersections and minor delays for those turning off the highway into residential side streets.

Motorway and Arterial Road Updates

The M1 Pacific Motorway is experiencing heavy volume, compounded by the shift of rail passengers to the road network and the end-of-week commute. Specific pinch points include the northbound stretch from Palm Beach to Reedy Creek and the southbound approach to the Smith Street Motorway. Additionally, in the city's north, the Ridgevale Drive overpass in Coomera remains fully closed for replacement works, with diversions in place via the M1 and local service roads.

Evening Event Alert: NRL Traffic

Motorists should be aware of increased traffic heading north toward Brisbane this afternoon for the NRL clash between the Broncos and the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium. Expect heavier than normal congestion on the M1 from 3:00 PM as fans travel to the capital. With the rail shutdown active, many fans will be using the road, further increasing the load on the motorway into the early evening.

Commuter Advice

To avoid the coastal crawl, we strongly recommend using Bermuda Street (State Route 3) as a primary alternative for north-south travel today. For those heading to the airport or the border, ensure you leave significantly earlier than usual to account for the single-lane sections through Burleigh Heads and Miami.
