Significant Disruptions Across the Network

Commuters and weekend travelers across the Gold Coast are advised to prepare for a challenging day on the roads and rails this Sunday, February 15, 2026. A combination of residual flash flooding from recent heavy rainfall, a major planned rail shutdown, and ongoing light rail construction will likely lead to significant travel delays. With more rain forecast throughout the day, authorities are urging residents to stay alert and plan their journeys in advance.

Major Rail Alert: Boggo Road to Varsity Lakes

The entire Gold Coast rail line is experiencing a total shutdown today due to essential track work. Rail replacement buses are currently operating in both directions between Boggo Road and Varsity Lakes stations. Travelers heading to Brisbane or the Airport should allow for at least 60 to 90 minutes of additional travel time. Translink has confirmed that regular train services are expected to resume early Monday morning, but for today, the bus network will be the primary link for rail commuters.

Gold Coast Highway and M1 Road Conditions

Motorists traveling between Miami and Burleigh Heads will face continued delays as the Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions. These restrictions, part of the Light Rail Stage 3 works, are in effect between Dawn Parade and West Burleigh Road. Speed limits are strictly enforced at 40km/h through the construction zone.

While the M1 Pacific Motorway is largely clear of major construction following the completion of the Varsity Lakes to Tugun upgrade, heavy rain has made conditions hazardous. Drivers are advised to watch for surface water and potential hydroplaning, especially near the Tallebudgera and Currumbin interchanges.

Flash Flooding and Local Road Closures

Emergency services have reported several active road closures following the 200mm of rain that fell over the weekend. Hinterland and low-lying areas are the most affected. Key closures currently in place include:

  • Hardys Road (Mudgeeraba/Bonogin): Closed due to long-term flooding.
  • Mount Cougal Road (Tallebudgera Valley): Closed at the end section due to flash flooding.
  • Old Coach Road (Reedy Creek): Inundated between Tallebudgera Creek Road and Kingsmore Boulevard.
  • Berrigans Road (Mudgeeraba): Full closure in effect.

Event Impacts and Parking

Congestion is expected to peak around major event precincts. The World Boardriders Club Championship at Snapper Rocks and the Shannon Eckstein Ironman Classic in Surfers Paradise are drawing large crowds today. Additionally, the Wedding Expo at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre will see high traffic volumes in Broadbeach. We recommend utilizing the G:link light rail for local travel between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach to avoid the search for parking.

Commuter Advice

If you must travel today, please avoid flooded causeways and obey all road closure signs. Utilize the Translink journey planner for the most up-to-date bus replacement schedules and keep your headlights on while driving in low-visibility rain conditions.
