Commuters and weekend travelers across the Gold Coast should prepare for significant disruptions this Saturday, 4 April 2026. As the Easter holiday period begins, a combination of a major rail network shutdown and intensive construction on the coastal corridor will likely result in increased travel times. Whether you are heading to the beach or commuting for work, planning ahead and considering alternative routes will be essential today.

Public Transport: 23-Day Rail Shutdown Begins

Translink has confirmed that a massive 23-day track closure is now in effect, significantly impacting the Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines. For Saturday, 4 April, the following changes are active:

• Buses Replace Trains: All train services between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road have been suspended to facilitate critical works for the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project and Cross River Rail integration.
• Travel Time Impacts: Passengers should allow for at least 45 to 60 minutes of additional travel time. Rail replacement buses will be operating, including express and all-stops services, but they are subject to road traffic conditions.
• Station Access: Commuters are encouraged to check the Translink journey planner as some replacement bus stops are located several minutes away from regular station platforms.

Major Roadworks and Arterial Delays

On the roads, the primary bottleneck remains the coastal corridor due to ongoing progress on the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3. Motorists should be aware of the following:

• Gold Coast Highway: The highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade in Miami and George Street East in Burleigh Heads. A strictly enforced 40km/h work zone speed limit is in effect.
• Coomera Connector (North): In the city’s north, construction on the Coomera Connector Stage 1 continues. The bridge overpass at Ridgevale Drive is fully closed for the 2026 replacement program. Drivers are being diverted via the Smith Street Motorway.
• Mudgeeraba: Berrigans Road remains closed to through traffic between Gold Coast-Springbrook Road and Mark Way for essential pavement rehabilitation.

Event Alert: Broadbeach Congestion

Pedestrian activity and local traffic volumes are expected to be high around Broadbeach and Kurrawa. The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (The Aussies) are currently underway, drawing large crowds to the beachfront. Parking in the Broadbeach precinct will be extremely limited. Authorities recommend using the G:link light rail (which remains operational between Helensvale and Broadbeach South) or park-and-ride facilities to access the event area.

To avoid the "coastal crawl" between Miami and Burleigh, north-south travelers are strongly advised to utilize Bermuda Street (State Route 3) or the M1 Pacific Motorway as primary alternatives.
