Significant Disruptions Expected Across Gold Coast Transport Networks

Commuters and weekend travelers across the Gold Coast should prepare for a challenging day on the roads and rails this Saturday, 28 March 2026. A combination of scheduled rail maintenance, intensive light rail construction, and essential hinterland road repairs is expected to impact travel times significantly throughout the region.

Public Transport: Rail Replacement Buses in Effect

Translink has confirmed a major weekend track closure affecting the inner city and Gold Coast lines. On Saturday, 28 March, and Sunday, 29 March, rail replacement buses will operate between key stations to facilitate essential infrastructure maintenance. Passengers traveling to or from Brisbane and the northern Gold Coast hubs should allow for at least 30 to 45 minutes of additional travel time. It is recommended that commuters check the Translink journey planner before departing, as bus stop locations may differ from regular train platforms.

Major Roadworks: Gold Coast Highway and Light Rail Stage 3

Construction for Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 continues to dominate the coastal corridor. Motorists will encounter the following restrictions today:

  • Miami to Burleigh Heads: The Gold Coast Highway remains restricted to a single lane in both directions from Dawn Parade to West Burleigh Road. A strictly enforced 40km/h speed limit is in place to ensure the safety of workers and pedestrians.
  • Nobby Beach: Final finishing works, including line marking and the installation of pedestrian handrails, are active along the lower Gold Coast Highway. While these works are nearing completion, intermittent stop-slow traffic control may be required.
  • Arundel: The eastbound access ramp to Smith Street from the Smith Street Motorway is currently closed for planned pavement rehabilitation. Detours are clearly signposted.

Hinterland and Regional Alerts

Travelers heading into the Gold Coast Hinterland must account for significant delays on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road. Reconstruction efforts are active at 28 separate sites between Neranwood and Pine Creek Road following previous landslip damage. Stop-slow traffic signals are in operation at multiple points, with estimated wait times of approximately 10 minutes per site. Additionally, the bridge overpass at Ridgevale Drive remains closed as part of the Coomera Connector project; motorists are advised to continue using the Smith Street Motorway as an alternative route.

Event Traffic: The Aussies 2026

With the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships ongoing at major coastal hubs, expect heavy pedestrian activity and limited parking availability near competition beaches. Localized traffic diversions may be implemented at short notice to manage crowd flow. Drivers are encouraged to utilize park-and-ride facilities where possible to avoid congestion in beachfront precincts.
