Major Arterial Updates: Gold Coast Highway and M1

Commuters heading along the coastal corridor this Friday, March 27, should prepare for significant delays as construction for the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 enters an intensive phase. The Gold Coast Highway remains reduced to a single lane in both directions between Dawn Parade in Miami and George Street East in Burleigh Heads. A strictly enforced 40 km/h speed limit is in effect throughout this zone. Motorists are advised that congestion is peaking near the intersections of Christine Avenue and West Burleigh Road, with travel times expected to increase by up to 20 minutes during the morning and afternoon peaks.

On the M1 Pacific Motorway, while major upgrades between Varsity Lakes and Tugun are largely complete, motorists should remain alert for maintenance crews near the northern end of the coast. Specifically, the Eight Mile Plains to Daisy Hill widening project continues to cause intermittent night-time lane closures. Drivers heading toward Brisbane should watch for changed traffic conditions and reduced speed zones that may remain in place until the early morning hours on Friday.

Local Road Closures and Infrastructure Works

Several localized road closures are expected to disrupt suburban travel across the Gold Coast today. Commuters should take note of the following disruptions:

  • Labrador: A full road closure is currently in effect on Turpin Road between First Avenue and Fourth Avenue. This closure is part of essential road maintenance and is expected to remain in place for the coming weeks. Detours are available via local arterial roads, but heavy traffic is expected on Brisbane Road as a result.
  • Mudgeeraba: Berrigans Road remains closed between Gold Coast-Springbrook Road and Mark Way for pavement rehabilitation. Motorists traveling toward the hinterland are encouraged to use alternative routes via local access roads.
  • Coomera: As part of the Coomera Connector Stage 1 project, the bridge overpass at Ridgevale Drive remains fully closed to all traffic. Detours are active via the Smith Street Motorway and local service roads.
  • Springbrook: Motorists heading into the hinterland must exercise extreme caution. There are currently 28 active work sites on the Gold Coast-Springbrook Road between Neranwood and Pine Creek Road focusing on landslip remediation. Expect stop/slow traffic control and intermittent delays.

Public Transport and Translink Alerts

Translink has confirmed that the Gold Coast rail line is operating a regular weekday schedule today; however, early morning commuters should be aware of potential flow-on effects from late-night track maintenance held on Thursday evening. While most services have returned to normal, small delays in the early hours are possible for those connecting through the inner-city Brisbane network.

Bus services along the Gold Coast Highway are also experiencing minor diversions and stop relocations in the Miami and Burleigh Heads areas due to the ongoing light rail construction. Passengers are encouraged to look for signage at their local stops for directions to temporary boarding zones.

Commuter Advice

To avoid the heaviest congestion, residents are encouraged to utilize north-south alternatives such as Bermuda Street or the M1 to bypass the single-lane restrictions on the Gold Coast Highway. If you must travel through the construction zones, please allow for additional travel time and follow all directions from traffic controllers to ensure the safety of road workers and fellow motorists.
