Significant Road Closures and Delays

Commuters heading toward Arundel and the northern Gold Coast this morning should prepare for a significant disruption at the Smith Street Motorway. The eastbound access ramp to Smith Street from the Smith Street Motorway in Arundel is currently closed to all traffic due to planned roadworks. Motorists are advised to utilize the Gaven Way or Gold Coast Highway as alternative routes to reach the Southport CBD, as heavy congestion is expected to build near the interchange during peak hours.

Further south, the Gold Coast Highway remains a major focus for delays. A full road closure is in effect at Mermaid Beach and Nobby Beach to facilitate ongoing infrastructure upgrades. Traffic is being diverted onto local side streets, and commuters should expect a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes of additional travel time through this corridor. In Helensvale, Buckler Drive between Cyan Street and the Town Centre Drive roundabout is also closed for bridge works, impacting local access to the Helensvale town center.

  • Southport Nerang Road: Roadworks are active in Molendinar between Riverwood Drive and Herbertson Drive. Expect reduced speed limits and intermittent lane closures throughout the day.
  • Tugun Bypass: Maintenance at the Exit 95 interchange (Tugun Currumbin Road to Gold Coast Highway) may cause short-term diversions for northbound travelers.
  • Burleigh Heads: Construction zones for the Light Rail Stage 3 extension are active between Second Avenue and West Burleigh Road. Traffic management is on-site to assist with flow, but lane narrowings are in place.

Public Transport and Rail Updates

Translink has confirmed that temporary train timetable changes are in effect today for the Gold Coast line. Between Ormeau and Varsity Lakes stations, commuters should check their specific service times as minor adjustments have been made to accommodate network maintenance. While the line remains open, some services may experience slight delays of 5 to 10 minutes. For those using the G:link light rail, services are running to their standard Monday frequency, though pedestrians in Burleigh Heads should note that the Second Avenue crossing is temporarily closed.

Advice for M1 Motorists

The M1 Pacific Motorway is experiencing its usual heavy volume through the central sections, specifically between Robina and Mudgeeraba. While no major accidents have been reported this morning, the ongoing M1 Upgrade Project between Palm Beach and Tugun continues to require reduced speed limits of 60km/h or 80km/h in designated work zones. Drivers are urged to maintain a safe following distance and obey all temporary signage to ensure the safety of road crews working near the shoulder.
