Significant Road Closures Across the Gold Coast

Commuters and residents across the Southern Gold Coast should prepare for notable disruptions this Sunday, 8 February 2026, as several major infrastructure projects reach critical phases. The most significant impact is at the Tugun Bypass, where Exit 95 (linking Tugun Currumbin Road to the Gold Coast Highway) remains closed to all traffic for scheduled roadworks. Authorities advise motorists to utilize alternative routes through Currumbin or Stewart Road to avoid heavy congestion in the area.

Further north, significant closures continue in Helensvale and Arundel. The Town Centre Drive bridge at Buckler Drive is currently closed to all traffic due to bridge maintenance. Additionally, the eastbound access ramp to Smith Street from the Smith Street Motorway in Arundel is shut down. Drivers heading toward the Southport district are encouraged to plan for extra travel time or divert via Olsen Avenue.

Public Transport and Light Rail Construction Alerts

Public transport users in Burleigh Heads will face evening changes starting today. Beginning at 7:00 PM tonight, Sunday 8 February, the bus stop on the Gold Coast Highway at Anzac Parade will be closed. This closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing construction for the Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 project. Passengers using routes 700 and 765 are advised to use alternative stops as directed by on-site signage. These overnight closures are expected to continue between 7:00 PM and 5:00 AM through most of the week.

In the wider rail network, Translink has confirmed that while the Gold Coast line is largely operational, there are early morning stop closures at the Roma Street busway station today. Commuters heading to Brisbane should check the latest Sunday timetable as some minor delays are expected due to ongoing station upgrades.

Major Events and Local Traffic Impacts

Local traffic is also being impacted by the final day of the AACTA Awards and Festival. Expect higher-than-usual pedestrian activity and localized traffic control around major venues. In Southport, motorists should be aware of possible disruptions near the Southport Sharks precinct due to the Laneway Festival. Streets such as Melia Court may see restricted access or rolling closures throughout the afternoon and evening as the event concludes.

For those traveling on the M1 Pacific Motorway, conditions remain mostly clear following the completion of major upgrade packages earlier last year; however, typical Sunday afternoon congestion is expected northbound near the Tallebudgera and Reedy Creek interchanges. Always maintain a safe following distance and remain alert for changing speed limits in active work zones.
